UCAAN Story

The invasion of Cancer in 2006 was the best intervention that could have come into Rachel Shur’s Life. Her diagnosis of final stage leukemia in 2006 with a 10% chance of survival – changed her entire outlook on life. Over the past several years she went through 9 rounds of heavy chemotherapy, 11 sessions of total body radiation and a stem cell transplant. She had been clear of cancer since 4/30/08 and celebrates every day to the fullest. Something that people don’t understand is that a battle with cancer changes your life forever, this can include everything from emotional trauma to physical ailments. For many, they are unable to return to their lives as it was and need to find their new normal. Just because you are “Cancer Free” doesn’t mean that you don’t need any help. Many of the side effects that come from treatments are NOT covered by insurance.

Shur had to find her New Normal, because she knew that things would never be the same. She embraced her cancer experience and started volunteering for other non profit organizations, but after a year and a half, she realized that talking about it wasn’t enough…. She had to do something more. This is when UCAAN was born! With Rachel’s passion to help others and desire to build an organization, she put together the first event, which raised enough money for Shur to officially file for UCAAN’s non profit status. The event was a Charity Date Auction with Celebrities in September, 2009. They raised $5700 and filed the paperwork. UCAAN has been a 501c3 organization since December 2010 and they continue to aid survivors of cancer and their families the best that they can each and every day!
